January 30, 2022 | Men's Tennis
CHAPEL HILL—Fifth-ranked Ohio State blanked No. 17 North Carolina, 4-0, in second-round action of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon.
With the win, Ohio State advances to the ITA Team Indoor National Championships later this month in Seattle. UNC sees the defense of its 2021 ITA Team Indoor National Championship come to an end.
James Trotter, ranked #42 in the nation, defeated Logan Zapp 6-2, 6-4 in the clincher at No. 4 singles. Matej Vocel, ranked No. 5 nationally, won the first singles match of the afternoon for the Buckeyes, beating Benjamin Sigouin 6-1, 6-3, at No. 2. OSU's Justin Boulais beat Henry Lieberman 6-4, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The Buckeyes started the day by winning a tightly contested doubles point. Robert Cash and Vocel, ranked No. 1 in the nation, beat 20th-ranked Casey Kania and Zapp of UNC, 6-1, to kick off the day's results.
The Tar Heels picked up a huge win at No. 1 doubles when Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger beat the No. 2-ranked duo of Boulais and Trotter. OSU clinched the doubles point when Cannon Kingsley and JJ Tracy topped Peter Murphy and Sigouin, 6-3, at No. 3.
Sunday's match marked the first time in the 13-year history of the ITA Kick-Off Weekend that a host site school faced a top-10 ranked team at home. Previously, the highest-ranked road team in the Kick-Off Weekend had been 11th-ranked Baylor at Michigan in 2019.
Ohio State improved to 5-0 this season. Carolina fell to 2-1.
The match began approximately 40 minutes behind schedule after the Northwestern-Arizona State match ran long earlier on Sunday. The Wildcats beat the Sun Devils in a tight thriller, 4-3.
The Tar Heels will return to action next Saturday at Illinois.
