Men’s Soccer Battles NC State To 2-2 Draw In Raleigh
October 14, 2022 | Men's Soccer
RALEIGH, N.C. – A back-and-forth match between the University of North Carolina men's soccer team and NC State ended in a 2-2 draw Friday night at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, moving the Tar Heels to 6-3-3 on the year and 2-2-2 in Atlantic Coast Conference action.
The Wolfpack struck first in the 13th minute when Conor Kelly's strike off a free kick from 22 yards out landed in the lower left corner. Their lead wouldn't last long as the Tar Heels found the equalizer less than six minutes later.
In a similar setup to the first goal of the match, Carolina was awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yard box in nearly the same position. Milo Garvanian's shot fell out of the Wolfpack keeper's gloves, allowing Til Zinnhardt to get a foot on it off the rebound and send it into the back of the net for his first goal as a Tar Heel.
NC State was then able to capitalize off another set piece on Pablo Pedregosa's header from a Kelly free kick in the 40th minute, giving the home team a 2-1 advantage heading into the break.
The Tar Heels once again leveled the score in the 65th minute. A short pass from Sam Williams found Akeim Clarke on the left perimeter who held off a defender and sent a cross into the 6-yard box. Ernest Bawa was able to tap it in off a bounce, marking his first goal of the season.
Eager to respond, UNC's best chance at taking the lead was a strike from Garvanian in the 68th minute, but his attempt was denied by Wolfpack keeper Lucas Hatsios. Hatsios made two saves during the contest as NC State now sits at 4-5-3 (1-4) on the season.
Three huge stops from Andrew Cordes in the last 20 minutes, including one in the game's final seconds, pushed the two in-state rivals to a 2-2 draw. Cordes finished with five stops between the posts for a new career high.
Carolina continues its four-game road stretch on Tuesday, Oct. 18 with a trip to Elon for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff at Rudd Field in Elon, N.C.
