Volleyball Falls To Syracuse In Five

CHAPEL HILL, N.C – The Carolina volleyball team (11-8, 3-5 ACC) fell to Syracuse (9-9, 5-3 ACC) in five sets on Sunday afternoon in Carmichael Arena.
Three Tar Heels recorded double-doubles in the loss, led by sophomore Mabrey Shaffmaster who tallied her eighth double-double of the season with 17 kills and 11 digs.
Graduate Charley Niego had 13 kills and 16 digs for her team-best ninth double-double, while freshman setter Anita Babic had 40 assists and 10 digs for her third career double-double.
Carolina, who leads the ACC in aces per set, continued to dominate at the service line, serving up 11 aces, led by five from senior Parker Austin and four from freshman Maddy May, and limiting the Orange to just five. This was the fourth match this season that the Tar Heels have had 10 or more aces and the third time in conference play.
The Orange out blocked the Tar Heels 12 to 10, and out hit the Tar Heels .250 to .164.

The Tar Heels travel to Raleigh to play NC State this Friday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.

- Liv Mogridge matched her career-best with five blocks
- Mabrey Shaffmaster has tallied double-digit kills in nine straight matches
- Carolina is 2-2 in five set matches this season
