Tar Heels Sweep ACC Field Hockey Weekly Honors
October 25, 2022 | Field Hockey
A pair of Tar Heel seniors followed up Senior Day by sweeping Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey honors for the week. Erin Matson was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week and Madison Orobono was selected as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, as announced Tuesday by the league.
The duo was recognized after the top-ranked Tar Heels (14-0) remained the nation's only unbeaten team with wins over two fellow top-10 opponents.
Matson totaled three goals and three assists for a total of nine points in the two weekend matches. On Friday against No. 7 Virginia, she scored twice in a 3-1 ACC win. On Sunday against No. 9 Saint Joseph's, she scored UNC's second goal and handed out three assists in a 6-0 victory. With her trio of assists on Sunday, she moved into second place on the school's all-time assists list and is now just three away from tying the UNC career record.
From her spot at center back and on the penalty corner defensive unit, Orobono helped anchor the Tar Heel defense as it allowed just one goal in 120 minutes. Against Virginia on Friday, she helped limit the Cavaliers to a single goal on 11 shots and six penalty corner opportunities. On Sunday against Saint Joseph's, she made a defensive save with seconds remaining in the third quarter to help preserve the 6-0 shutout, UNC's seventh of the season.
The Tar Heels finish the regular season on Saturday with a noon game at Duke. After that they look ahead to the ACC Tournament, which will also take place in Durham, N.C.
