Field Hockey Caps Off Undefeated Regular Season With 2-0 Win At Duke
October 29, 2022 | Field Hockey
DURHAM, N.C. – Top-ranked North Carolina earned a 2-0 field hockey win at No. 25 Duke on Saturday afternoon in the Tar Heels' final regular-season game of the fall. North Carolina finished the regular season with an undefeated 15-0 record, going 6-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
"I was impressed today because Duke took us out of our comfort zone," UNC head coach Karen Shelton said. "We had to scramble a bit and handle the mistakes we made and make some adjustments. We expected Duke to play great today, and I think they did. They gave us everything we could handle and put incredible pressure on us. It was good for us to handle that pressure the way we did."
The Tar Heels' penalty corner goal came with just 25 second left in the first quarter on the team's third corner of the game. Senior Erin Matson sent her shot just inside the left post, assisted by seniors Paityn Wirth on the insert and Romea Riccardo on the stop.
Carolina's second goal of the game came with less than five minutes remaining in the first half. Matson sent a no-look pass to sophomore Kennedy Cliggett who scored. It was the Warrington, Pa., native's fifth goal of the season.
On the day, Carolina outshot the Blue Devils 10-4, and led them 6-3 in penalty corners. Sophomore Abigail Taylor made the Tar Heels' sole save on the day.
The Tar Heels will return to Durham next week for the 2022 ACC Championship. Top-seeded Carolina earned a bye into Wednesday's 1 p.m. semifinal game. The Tar Heels will face the winner of Tuesday's 1 p.m. quarterfinal matchup between No. 4 Boston College (8-9, 3-3) and No. 5 Syracuse (14-4, 3-3).
