Erin Matson scored four times and added an assist for nine points at Liberty on Sunday.
Matson Named ACC Player Of The Week For Third Time
October 4, 2022 | Field Hockey
For the second week in a row and the third time this season, UNC forward Erin Matson has been recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week.
Matson shares the offensive honor this week with Virginia freshman Daniela Mendez-Trendler. Virginia's Jet Trimborn and Wake Forest's Ellie Todd shared Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Matson scored four goals and added an assist to finish Sunday's 6-3 win at Liberty with nine points. She scored the gamewinner in the fifth minute of play on her first penalty stroke of the season and kept rolling from there. After UNC scored another then Liberty answered with one, Matson scored again 23 seconds before halftime to put the Tar Heels up 3-1 at the break.
Coming out of halftime, Matson assisted on a goal by Paityn Wirth and then scored back-to-back to put UNC up 6-1 early in the fourth quarter against the Flames, who had allowed just seven total goals in the season's first 10 games and led the nation in scoring margin.
Matson's nine points on the day brought her to exactly 300 points for her career, six shy of equaling the ACC's all-time scoring mark. The senior's four goals tied her single-game high and marked the fourth time during her UNC career that she's scored that many in a single game.
Matson is the ACC leader in goals (1.44 per game) and points (3.22 per game) and ranks second nationally in both categories.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a trip to the Northeast, where they'll play at Boston College on Friday and at UConn on Sunday. Their next home game is on Oct. 14 against Syracuse.
