Garvanian, White Push Men’s Soccer Past Virginia Tech, 2-0
October 7, 2022 | Men's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A goal in each half lifted the University of North Carolina men's soccer team past Virginia Tech, 2-0, on Friday night at Dorrance Field, giving the Tar Heels three crucial points in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Following the win, UNC improves to 5-3-2 on the season and 2-2-1 in league action while the Hokies fall to 2-9-1 (0-5).
The home team, which took control of the game early on, had two quick opportunities in the opening minute off back-to-back headers from Akeim Clarke and Juan Caffaro, but both chances came up short.
After Andrew Cordes denied the Hokies' only attempt on goal during the match and another strong scoring chance from Ernest Bawa, Key White finally gave the Tar Heels their go-ahead goal just two minutes after subbing in.
Milo Garvanian broke through traffic to slip the ball through a pair of Hokie defenders which connected with White in the 23rd minute. White's shot from right outside the 6-yard box snuck between keeper Ben Martino's legs and into the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.
Carolina came out of the break pressing, firing off five shots before Garvanian's team-high fourth goal of the season sealed a 2-0 UNC victory in the 67th minute. A pass from Matt Edwards found Garvanian, whose strike from nearly 25 yards out deflected over Martino and bounced into the net.
The fifth-year's three points on the night brings his season total to 10 to match his career high set during the 2021 campaign.
Continuing to out-pace Virginia Tech, Carolina had five shots on goal in the game's final 20 minutes and finished the contest with a 17-5 edge in shots. Led by Clarke with a game-high four, 10 different Tar Heels recorded at least one shot for the most in any of their ACC game this season.
Between the posts, Cordes made one save for his fourth shutout and Martino concluded the match with seven. UNC's stalwart back line limited the Hokies to just one shot in the second half.
Carolina is back for its penultimate regular season home game on Tuesday, Oct. 11 against Virginia Commonwealth. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field.
