Women's Soccer Advances Past Georgia Into Round Three
November 17, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor scored two goals and second-seeded North Carolina defeated No. 7 seed Georgia 3-1 on Thursday night in the second round of the 2022 NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Championship.
With the victory, the Tar Heels (17-4-1) advance to the third round to take on No. 6 seed BYU (11-2-6) on Saturday, Nov. 19, at 11:30 a.m. on Dorrance Field.
The Cougars advanced by upsetting No. 3 seed Stanford earlier in the day on penalty kicks, 5-4, after playing to a 1-1 double overtime draw.
Carolina defeated BYU, 2-0, in an exhibition match in August.
Sentnor opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after dancing around a pair of defenders and then shooting the ball past Georgia goalkeeper Jordan Brown.
Sentnor's second goal came in the 57th minute as she received a pass from Isabel Cox and raced past two defenders for her second brace in as many games.
Six minutes before Sentnor's second goal, Avery Patterson passed off to the trailing Talia Dellaperuta, who fired off a shot inside the penalty arc, for the Tar Heels' second goal.
Patterson has recorded a point in three consecutive games.
Georgia (13-6-3) scored its first goal in five meetings against UNC in the 77th minute as Madison Haugen found the back of the net.
The Tar Heels scored the first 23 goals of the five-game series before conceding one.
"We took a gamble up 3-0 and cleared the bench, and of course, they got back in it," UNC head coach Anson Dorrance said. "Up 3-1 you're not comfortable anymore. They get another goal and they're back in it. We were trying to figure out a way to rest for BYU, but really didn't get to rest because they scored, and we had to put the starters back in."
UNC came out in a 1-3-5-2 formation and allowed just two shots on goal, eight shots overall while putting eight of its 17 shot attempts on frame.
"This was an intentional system change in order for us to see if we can compete to be the best team in the country," Dorrance explained. "It gives us the opportunity to have a lot of people in the attacking box."
