Matson Named NFHCA South Region Player Of The Year

UNC senior Erin Matson has been honored as the NFHCA South Region Player of the Year, as announced on Wednesday by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. Matson is one of five regional honorees who are now in the running for NFHCA Player of the Year honors.

A forward from Chadds Ford, Pa., Matson scored the gamewinning goal in the national championship game and led the nation in points per game as UNC finished the season 21-0 and won the program's 10th NCAA title. She finished her Tar Heel career as the leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history and was named the ACC Player of the Year a record five times.

Mideast Region: Sophia Gladieux, Penn State
Northeast Region: Alison Smisdom, Albany
West Region: Bente Baekers, Northwestern

The NFHCA Division I Regional Player of the Year announcement is the second in a list of postseason awards from the NFHCA. Last week the 2022 NFHCA Division I All-Region teams were announced. The Division I All-American teams will be announced on December 13 and the NFHCA National Player of the Year on December 15.
