Matson Named NFHCA DI National Player Of The Year
December 15, 2022 | Field Hockey
Senior forward Erin Matson has been named the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I National Player of the Year, the NFHCA announced on Thursday. The honor follows a season in which the UNC field hockey team finished 21-0 and won the program's 10th NCAA Championship, its fourth in the past five season.
Â
This marks the third time in her five-year career that Matson has won the NFHCA honor, with the first two coming in 2019 and 2020, which were also NCAA Championship seasons for the Tar Heels.
Â
During the 2022 season, Matson became the all-time leading scorer in Atlantic Coast Conference history. She was named ACC Offensive Player of the Year for the fifth time and is the only student-athlete in any sport to earn conference player of the year honors five times.
Â
The Tar Heels' 2022 ACC Championship was the program's sixth in a row and 25th overall.
Â
Matson was named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player after scoring twice and assisting on another goal in the 3-0 semifinal win vs Penn State and then scoring the game winner in the 2-1 championship victory against Northwestern.
Â
She was named to the NFHCA All-America first team for the fifth year in a row after leading the nation in goals per game and points per game.
