February 1, 2022 | Baseball
As calendar turns to February and the 2022 season inches closer, the Meet The Tar Heels series continues with its third installment featuring freshman right-handed pitcher Carson Starnes. The 6-foot-4 standout from P27 Academy in Lexington, S.C. will wear the No. 44.
Â
Recently ranked as the No. 22 recruiting class in the country by DI Baseball, Carolina's crop of newcomers includes 12 freshmen and four transfers. A native of Monroe, N.C., Sloan came to UNC ranked as the No. 329 player nationally on top of being the No. 30 player and No. 9 right-handed pitcher in the state.
Â
"I've had family that went to UNC and I've always been a Tar Heel fan," Starnes said. "As soon as I got that offer, it was the time."
Â
Starnes began his prep career at Parkwood High School in Monroe before attending P27 Academy for his senior season. He struck out 42 batters in 32 innings pitched during his two years on the varsity at Parkwood, compiling a 2.19 ERA and holding opponents to a .192 average.
Â
Starnes received all-region and honorable mention All-America accolades from Perfect Game.
