MADISON, Wis. – No. 2 North Carolina, the two-time defending national champions of the annual ITA Women's Team Indoor Championship, begins its journey through the four-day tournament against No. 11 Ohio State on Friday from the Nielsen Tennis Center in Madison, Wisconsin, at 10 a.m. ET.
Carolina is seeking to join Stanford as the only programs to ever win three-straight indoor titles. The Cardinal won three of its record 10 championships between 2004-06. Additionally, UNC will look to add to its run of seven straight finals appearances, the longest streak in the events history that dates back to 1988.
The Tar Heels have won indoor titles in 2013, 2015, 2018, 2020 and 2021. The most recent trophy came last February in Stillwater, Okla., where UNC trailed 3-2 against Texas and lost the opening set on the two remaining courts. Then freshman Fiona Crawley trailed 4-1 in her third set, but miraculously won the final five points of the match to knock off Longhorn senior Fernada Labrana to knot the score at 3-3.
The championship point was decided on court four, and similar to Crawley's dramatics it was Elizabeth Scotty that fell behind 2-0 in her third-set match before tallying the final six points to secure the victory.
The Tar Heels have met up with the Buckeyes twice previously at ITA Indoors and were victorious each time. Carolina posted a 4-0 shutout in last year's opening round, and won 4-3 in the 2017 semifinals in New Haven, Conn.
As a single-elimination tournament, teams will play one match each day with the championship match held on Monday, Feb. 14, at 1 p.m. ET. However, all teams are guaranteed to play at least three matches over the weekend through either the main or consolation draw.
