Swimming & Diving Heads To Atlanta For ACC Championships
February 14, 2022 | Swimming & Diving
CHAPEL HILL - The University of North Carolina men and women's swimming and diving team travels to Atlanta this week to compete at the ACC Championships inside the McAuley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech. This will be the sixth time the venue has served as the league's championship site.
Â
The five-day competition (Feb. 15-19) will begin on Tuesday at 11 a.m. with the women's 1-meter and men's 3-meter diving competitions as well as the 800-yard free relay. The final four days of swimming will begin with prelims at 10 a.m. while finals will start at 6 p.m.
Senior Anton Down-Jenkins and sophomore Aranza Vazquez will look to repeat at the league's top performers in the diving events. Down-Jenkins is the conference's top ranked diver on both the men's 1 and 3-meter springboard while Vazquez is the league's top ranked diver on the women's 1-meter diving competition. They were tabbed ACC Men and Women's ACC Diver-of-the-Year a year ago.
This week's meet will mark the final ACC Championships for Tar Heel seniors Valdas Abaliksta, Tucker Burhans, Grace Countie, Lilly Higgs, Sophie Lindner, Heidi Lowe, Jacob Rauch and Tomas Sungaila in addition to Down-Jenkins.
Abaliksta will look to improve his standing in the 100-yard breaststroke by at least one position and earn a spot on the medal stand after placing fourth in the events last season. Countie captured third place in the women's 100-yard backstroke and looks to be a strong contender for a medal again in 2022.
All sessions of the championships will air live on ACC Network Extra. Replays will be shown the following day on ACC Network (see below for complete schedule).
