
Men In First At ACC Swimming & Diving Championships

ATLANTA – The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team wrapped up day one of the 2022 ACC Championships in first place with 105 points on Tuesday night at the McCauley Aquatic Center on the campus of Georgia Tech. The Tar Heels collected two medals and set one program record.
Senior diver Anton Down-Jenkins and junior Alex Hart finished second and third, respectively in the three-meter springboard competition. Down-Jenkins fell three points shy of repeating as ACC Champion in the event, posting a score of 445.10 while Miami's Max Flory earned a score of 448.50. Hart received a score of 406.40 to earn the bronze medal.
Although the UNC men's 800-yard freestyle relay team didn't earn a spot on the podium, they did establish a new school record in the event. Tomas Sungaila, Nick Radkov, Patrick Hussey and Noah Rutberg posted a time of 6:16.96, shaving nearly three second off the previous record of 6:19.20.
The Carolina women's team finished the day in third place with 96 points, trailing only Miami, who leads with 119 points and Duke with 111 points.
Sophomore Aranza Vazquez and junior Paige Burrell scored valuable points for the Tar Heels in the one-meter springboard competition. Vazquez finished in fourth place with a score of 338.65 and Burrell placed eighth with a score of 270.65.
The women's 800-yard freestyle relay team of Sophie Lindner, Amy Dragelin, Ellie VanNote and Addison Smith claimed sixth place with a time of 7:05.35
The championships continue Wednesday at 10 a.m. with preliminary events. Wednesday's finals events start at 6 p.m. They air live on ACC Network Extra and also are accessible via the WatchESPN app. Direct links to the ACCNX feeds and live results are available at theACC.com.
