Carolina Volleyball Adds Swift, Bostic and May to 2022 Roster

CHAPEL HILL – Head volleyball coach Joe Sagula is excited to announce the addition of three new Tar Heels to the 2022 roster: freshmen Sadie Swift, Ella Bostic and Maddy May.
"I'm very excited to welcome the next members of our class of 2022 who round off our incoming freshmen class as one of the top signing classes in the country," Sagula said.
"We have all the pieces and positions to continue building our program to compete at the highest level for years to come."
Name: Maddy May
Position: L/DS
Height: 5'11"
Hometown: Greenville, N.C.
High School: D.H. Conley
Club Team: Triangle Volleyball Club
A four-year letterwinner at D.H. Conley High School, Maddy May is an outside hitter under coach Jennifer Gillikin. As a freshman, May helped the Vikings to a 3A State Championship runner-up finish and a Big East Conference championship as the starting right side hitter. Serving as a captain both her sophomore and junior seasons, she helped lead her team to a 3A State Championship and was named the 3A State Championship MVP, the Big East Conference Player of the Year and the team's defensive player of the year. May also played at the Triangle Volleyball Club as a libero under coaches Robin Bugg and Aaron Harrison.
"Maddy will make a great impact in our gym immediately with her work ethic and athleticism," Sagula said.
"She is a physical defender and covers a lot of court. She reads the game well, having played multiple positions throughout her career and has a high volleyball IQ. And, most importantly, Maddy knows how to win. She has proven that as a state champion at DH Conley, and she is passionate, driven, a leader. We're very excited to keep one of the best players at home here in North Carolina."
A Greenville, N.C., native, May is the daughter of Josh and Beth May and has a younger sister, Sophie. May is a member of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Honor Society, National English Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and earned the 2020 D.H. Conley Health Science Award. She plans on majoring in sports medicine at Carolina with the goal of becoming either an athletic trainer or a surgeon.

Position: Setter

Club Team: Munciana
A three-year letter winner at Carmel High School, Ella Bostic is a setter for coach Kristine Deem. A three-time academic all-conference selection, Bostic served as varsity team captain her senior year and surpassed 2,400 career assists. She also earned her second all-district recognition and was named to the All-USA Central Indiana Super Team.
Bostic played club volleyball at Munciana for coach Mike Lingenfelter and was teammates with current Carolina freshman Mabrey Shaffmaster. Some of the many recognitions she received during her time on the club circuit include being named a 2019 AAU All-American, a 2019 JVA All-National Team selection, a 2020 AVCA Phenom List and a Prep Volleyball Top-150 selection. She also helped Munciana earn an 18 Open AAU National Championship title in 2021.
"Ella just keeps getting better every time we see her compete," Sagula said. "Her growth in the past two years have us all very excited about her future as an offensive leader with great skills. She has a championship mindset along with the experience of leading her team to AAU titles and competing at the highest level. She continues to elevate her game and I know she will be well prepared for this next step here in Chapel Hill having come from the same program as Nia Parker-Robinson and Mabrey Shaffmaster."
Bostic is the daughter of Amy and Brad Bostic and has two siblings, Bonnie and Cal. She comes from a distinguished athletic family. Her sister, Bonnie, is a sophomore on the Yale volleyball team and her dad, Brad, played on the University of Indiana football team. Her uncle is Rex Grossman, the former All-American quarterback for the University of Florida, who was named the 2001 AP Collegiate Football Player of the Year. Her paternal grandfather, Sid, played basketball at the South Dakota State, helping the Jackrabbits to the 1963 NCAA DII national championship title.
Bostic plans on majoring in business with a costume designer minor with the goal of working in the fashion industry and building a high-fashion brand.

Club Team: Roots Volleyball
A four-year letter winner at Stephen F. Austin High School, Swift plays middle blocker for coach Kiley Woods. A three-time first-team all-district selection, Swift helped the Maroos to a 26-6A District Championship as a senior and was named the team co-MVP and defensive MVP. A two-sport athlete, Swift is also a four-year all-district letter winner on the varsity basketball team as a forward/post.
She plays club volleyball for Austin Performance and Roots Volleyball under coaches Lindsay Rosenthal Jessica Brannan, helping her team to a USAV Nationals 15U National Championship title while being named to the USAV Nationals 15U All-Tournament team.
"Sadie is going to surprise a lot of people and be a big-time player at Carolina," Sagula said.
"She is long, moves really well, and has a lively arm. As a multi-sport athlete, she knows how to compete and lead her team both on and off the court. Sadie is going to make an impact with her athleticism and commitment to the game. I am proud she is a Tar Heel. She will be a key player for our program and our future."
Swift is the daughter of Becka and Whit Swift and has one younger sister, Emmy. She is currently an Austin ISD Trustee Scholar, ranking in top ten percent of her graduating class for the past four years.
"All three of these Tar Heels not only will bring a competitive passion for the game, with varied experiences, they are also outstanding students in their class and will represent Carolina at the highest level over their careers in Chapel Hill," Sagula said.
