Wrestling Falls To NC State, 25-12

RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 22 North Carolina wrestling team won three matches in Friday's dual with No. 4 NC State but fell to the Wolfpack 25-12 at Reynolds Coliseum in Raleigh to close its regular season.
The Tar Heels were victorious at 133, 141, and 174 pounds but ultimately were downed by the Wolfpack.
Spencer Moore and Joe Heilmann opened the dual at 125 and 133 pounds, respectively. Moore was locked in a heater late with No. 14 Jakob Camacho but surrendered a late takedown to drop the bout 7-2. Heilmann matched up with No. 14 Kai Orine and earned the 4-2 sudden victory for his third-ranked win of the season.
No. 7 Kizhan Clarke got the Tar Heels in the lead at 141 pounds. Clarke was able to grind out a 4-3 victory over No. 24 Ryan Jack. With the victory, the Tampa, Fla., product finished 17-1 on the regular season and 12-1 in duals.
No. 17 Zach Sherman was defeated by No. 3 Tariq Wilson, 6-2 at 149 pounds.
No. 11 Ed Scott put on a clinic at 157 pounds versus Mason Phillips, claiming a 21-6 technical fall decision to give the Wolfpack the 11-6 match lead. Isaias Estrada collected the first points of the match versus No. 21 Thomas Bullard but was overtaken early and lost via major decision, 10-2, to push the Wolfpack advantage to 15-6.
The highlight of the night was at 174 pounds when No. 9 Clay Lautt used the late pin in the second period to knock off previously unbeaten No. 4 Hayden Hidlay and finish the regular season with a 14-4 record. With the win, he creates momentum as he heads into ACC's, where he entered the day ranked ninth at 174 pounds. Lautt's win was his first against NC State and moved the score to 15-12 NC State heading into the final three bouts.
No. 9 Gavin Kane dropped a major decision, 13-3, to No. 3 Trent Hidlay, and No. 27 Max Shaw suffered a 6-0 defeat to No. 15 Isaac Trumble, which locked in the dual win for NC State. Brandon Whitman fell to Owen Trephan via 6-2 decision to end the night
The Tar Heels now turn their focus to the ACC Championships slated for March 6 in Charlottesville, Va., at John Paul Jones Arena. For ticketing information, fans can access ACC tickets online.
