Women's Golf Begins Spring Play In Melbourne

Tar Heels in Action at Moon Golf Invitational Sunday-Tuesday
The Carolina women's golf team begins play in the spring semester at the Moon Golf Invitational Sunday, February 20, through Tuesday, February 22.
The 15-team field will compete on the Classic Course at the Suntree Country Club in Melbourne, Fla.
UNC is one of six ACC teams vying for the title. The tournament includes nine teams in Golfstat's top 25. The field features No. 9 Alabama, No. 6 Arkansas, No. 17 Auburn, Augusta State, No. 15 Baylor, No. 19 Duke, No. 7 Florida, Florida State, Louisville, No. 21 LSU, Miami, North Carolina, No. 3 South Carolina, UCF and No. 8 Virginia.
The Tar Heel lineup for the Moon Golf Invitational includes juniors Kayla Smith and Krista Junkkari, sophomores Crista Izuzquiza and Nicole Adam and freshman Stephany Kim.
Junkkari led the team in stroke average in the fall, averaging 72.33 strokes in 12 rounds over four tournaments.
UNC's best team finish in the fall was a tie for fifth at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.
Junkkari set or tied numerous school records in that event, including an 18-hole record 65 in the first round and 54-hole totals of 12-under 204. The native of Finland finished in second place, Carolina's best individual performance in the fall.
