Tar Heels Rally for 2-Under Finish in Round One
Fourth-ranked North Carolina rallied from a slow start and is just one shot off the lead after the opening round of the Watersound Invitational Sunday at the Shark's Tooth Golf Course in Panama City Beach, Fla.
The Tar Heels opened with two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys over their first two holes and were 4 over par after 11 holes. However, over the final seven holes Carolina counted 10 birdies, one bogey and a triple bogey to knock six strokes off par and finish the round at 2-under-par 286.
UNC is tied for second place with Virginia Tech, a stroke behind No. 17 Georgia Tech. NC State is fourth at 1 under and Virginia is fifth at 3 over.
Junior Austin Greaser and freshman David Ford led the Tar Heel comeback, combining to shoot 7 under par on the back nine to both climb into the top five in the individual standings.
Greaser is tied for second place after shooting 3-under 69. He began his day with a double bogey but got back to par with birdies on the third and sixth holes. Greaser shot 3 under on the inward nine, which included four birdies in a six-hole stretch.
Ford bogeyed two of the first three holes, then played error-free the rest of the round with four birdies and 11 pars over his final 15 holes. He made birdies on 13, 16, 17 and to shoot 2-under 70 which earned him a tie for fifth.
Senior Ryan Gerard shot even-par 72 and sophomore Peter Fountain was 3 over.
Alabama's Canon Claycomb is the first-round leader with a 67.
Round two of the 54-hole event is Monday. Shark's Tooth is the site of the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, which will be held April 22-25.
