Ortega Breaks UNC Points Record As Tar Heels Dominate Pitt, 15-5

PITTSBURGH, PA.— Jamie Ortega broke the UNC career points record as the second-ranked North Carolina women's lacrosse team dominated at Pitt, 15-5, on Thursday afternoon at Highmark Stadium.
Ortega tallied three goals and two assists for five points to give her 373 points in her career. She passed former teammate Katie Hoeg, who finished her career with 370 points in 2021.
It was the 2022 Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both schools and Pitt's first-ever ACC game. The Tar Heels improved to 4-0 this season, 1-0 in the ACC. Pitt fell to 3-1, 0-1.
Carolina is 57-6 in its last 63 games against ACC opponents (regular season and postseason).
Ally Mastroianni set a career high with 11 draw controls for the Tar Heels, who dominated possession throughout the game and won 19 of 24 draws on the day.
In addition to Ortega's five points, Scottie Rose Growney scored four goals, Olivia Dirks had her first hat trick as a Tar Heel and Caitlyn Wurzburger scored twice.
Junior Melissa Sconone dished out a career-high and game-high four assists for UNC. Livi Lawton, Reilly Casey and Nicole Humphrey added single assists.
Taylor Moreno started her 58th consecutive game in goal for Carolina and picked up her 52nd career win, extending her own school record for goalie victories. She made four saves and allowed just four goals in 48:35 of action.
Alecia Nicholas relieved Moreno in the cage and played the final 11:25, making one save and allowing two goals.
Carolina outshot the Panthers, 34-13, and forced 17 Pitt turnovers.
The Tar Heels will return home for their next outing and begin a four-game homestand by hosting Jacksonville on Sunday February 27 at 11 a.m.
