February 5, 2022 | Baseball
Chapel Hill, NC -- Alberto Osuna's Grand Slam homer in the bottom of the fifth inning broke a 3-3 tie and propelled Blue to a 7-3 win over Navy in a five-and-a-half inning scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at a sunny Boshamer Stadium.
Navy scored the first run of the afternoon when Angel Zarate's bases-loaded single to second drove in a run in the top of the second. Blue responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Reece Holbrook drove in a run with a single to left, then Eric Grintz also had a one-run single to left.
Navy followed with two runs in the top of the third on Casey Cook's two-run homer to right center to give Navy a 3-2 lead. Blue tied the score at 3-3 when Max Riemer scored on an infield error in the fourth.
Osuna then blasted a bases-loaded homer to left center with two outs in the bottom of the fifth when he got all of an 0-2 pitch to give Blue a 7-3 lead.
Blue outhit Navy by a 7-6 margin, while Navy had two errors to one for Blue. Mac Horvath's sixth-inning double to left was the only other extra base hit besides Cook and Osuna's homers.
Connor Bovair started for Blue, with Nik Pry, Gage Gillian, Tanner Quick and Kyle Mott throwing in relief. Shaddon Peavyhouse started for Navy and was relieved by Caleb Cozart and Davis Palermo.
The Tar Heels will hold their next scrimmage on Sunday afternoon.
