February 5, 2022 | Women's Tennis
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The North Carolina women's tennis team passed its toughest test of the season with a 5-2 win on the road at Michigan on Saturday afternoon.
The second-ranked Tar Heels won the doubles point and then won four of six singles matches to improve their record to 7-0 this spring, and will now set focus on next weekend's ITA National Team Indoor Championship.
Playing its first ranked opponent of the season, Carolina picked up a pair of 6-4 doubles wins from No. 1 Fiona Crawley and Elizabeth Scotty on court one and No. 6 Cameron Morra and Carson Tanguilig on court two to take the early 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels rolled out the same singles lineup from last weekend during the ITA Kick-Off. No. 13 Carson Tanguilig continued her outstanding play as a freshman at five singles with a 6-3, 6-3, win over No. 99 Julia Fliegner.
No. 19 Fiona Crawley was next to finish with a 6-4, 6-2, win over Jaedan Brown and Elizabeth Scotty confirmed the team victory from court two with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, win over No. 120 Nicole Hammond.
Michigan (3-2) took the first two points off Carolina this season with a pair of singles wins, before No. 7 Reilly Tran closed the afternoon out with a straight-set win on court three.
Carolina has won six of the last seven meetings with the Wolverines. The lone setback was UNC's last non-conference road loss, a 5-2 result on Feb. 20, 2016.
Carolina, the two-time defending ITA National Team Indoor Champions, will head to Madison, Wisconsin, next weekend for the event that begins on Friday from the Nelson Tennis Center.
The draw is expected to be released on Tuesday.
