March 11, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL – The Diamond Heels open ACC play this weekend against Coastal Division rival Pittsburgh at Boshamer Stadium with all three games streaming live on ACC Network Extra.
Carolina dropped three of four to the Panthers in 2021, but still lead the all-time series 12-11. This will be the Panthers' first visit to Boshamer Stadium since 2018, where UNC holds a 7-2 series advantage.
The Diamond Heels have won 15 straight at home dating back to last season, including all 11 at the Bosh this season. They own a record of 11-2 overall and were ranked in the top 20 in all six polls entering the week, peaking at No. 15 in D1 Baseball.
In its lone midweek game, UNC out-hit No. 14 Liberty 9-4, but were unable to scratch a run across and suffered a 1-0 loss in Lynchburg, Va. The Flames' Aaron Anderson homered in the bottom of the first inning to provide the only run of the game. The Diamond Heels' pitching staff combined for 14 strikeouts and the bullpen yielded just one hit in six innings of relief.
With an ERA of 1.63, North Carolina has the fourth-lowest team ERA in the country heading into the weekend and rank 13th in fewest hits allowed per nine innings (6.21) and have the 20th-best strikeout to walk ratio (3.59).
Pitt enters ACC play with an overall record of 8-4, winning three in a row with wins over Ohio State and Campbell at the All-American Classic Fayetteville followed by a 15-5 victory at High Point on Wednesday.
Catcher Tatem Levins is the reigning ACC Player-of-the-Week. He homered in all three at the All-American Classic, while driving in nine and posting a 1.231 slugging percentage. He ranks 14th nationally in home runs (6), 35th in slugging percentage (.822) 40th in total bases (37) and 46th in RBIs (17).
