Duke Upends Men's Tennis, 5-2
March 16, 2022 | Men's Tennis
DURHAM, N.C.—The 18th-ranked Duke men's tennis team won five of six singles matches and defeated No. 17 North Carolina, 5-2, on Wednesday afternoon at the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center. The teams played the match indoors despite springtime temperatures due to heavy rain in the area.
The loss snapped Carolina's two-match winning streak and dropped the Tar Heels to 8-6 overall in 2022, 3-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Duke improved to 11-4 this season.
Last weekend, the Tar Heels won a pair of road ACC matches against ranked teams at Miami and Florida State. Returning to the road for the third time in a four-match road swing away from Chapel Hill, the Blue Devils ended Carolina's run of consecutive wins,
Carolina won the doubles point behind wins from the ranked duos of No. 8Â Brian Cernoch and Mac Kiger at No. 1 and No. 57 Logan Zapp and Casey Kania at No. 2.
After Carolina had taken a 1-0 lead to start the afternoon, Duke stormed back and won four consecutive singles matches to cinch the team win.Â
Anuj Watane won his singles match at No. 6, coming from behind after losing the first set to beat Andrew Dale 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.
Carolina will complete its four-match road trip on Sunday March 20 at Boston College before returning home to Chapel Hill the following week.
