March 2, 2022 | Softball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Carolina softball head coach Donna Papa earned her 1,300th victory at UNC on Wednesday night with a 7-3 victory over Villanova.
Bri Stubbs went a perfect 3-of-3 at the plate against the Wildcats, while Sara Jubas had three RBIs.
In the circle, Hannah George improved to 6-0 and Talia Hannappel earned her second save of the season.
As a team, the Tar Heels hit .417, their second highest hitting performance of the season and best since Feb. 12 against Lipscomb (.424).
After a scoreless first, the Wildcats got on the board first in the top of the second, hitting a solo home run.
The Tar Heels took the lead in the bottom of the third. Destiny Middleton opened the inning with a triple to center field, followed by a Bri Stubbs walk. After Stubbs stole second, Jubas had runners on second and third when she hit a double down the middle, scoring both and giving Carolina a 2-1 advantage.
The Tar Heels added to the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with Kayla Baptista drawing a walk to open the inning in her first at-bat of the season. Stubbs then plated Baptista with a double to center field, which she advanced to third on after an error by Villanova's left fielder. Gaby Katz, in her first at-bat, hit an RBI double to center, giving the Tar Heels a 4-1 advantage.
Sara Jubas earned her third RBI of the game with her second double of the night, putting Carolina up by four runs.
The Wildcats were able to get the score back to within two runs in the top of the fifth, hitting a two-run home run, their second long ball of the day to make it 5-3.
Stubbs and Brooks each had an RBI in the bottom of the sixth, an inning that included three Tar Heel hits from Stubbs, Katie Perkins and Brooks.
The Tar Heels return home on Friday to host the Carolina Classic, a three-day tournament featuring Oregon, Penn State, UConn and UNCG. Admission is free.
