Moreno Named ACC Defensive Player Of The Week
March 22, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—North Carolina graduate student goalie Taylor Moreno is the ACC Defensive Player of the Week, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday. It's the second such honor of the season for Moreno, the preseason National Goalie of the Year.
Notre Dame graduate attack Maddie Howe was selected the ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Moreno was brilliant in goal in then-No. 2 UNC's 16-15 win at top-ranked Boston College on Sunday. She led a 6-0 Tar Heel run in the second and third quarters by holding the high-scoring Eagles (the nation's second-highest scoring team) scoreless for a span of 21 minutes, five seconds. Moreno blanked BC for all of the second quarter and the opening minutes of the third as UNC turned a 4-3 deficit into a 9-4 lead it would not relinquish. The native of Huntington, New York, made six saves on the day and gathered a ground ball in leading the Tar Heel defense from the back.
Howe had a career day in the Fighting Irish's 17-10 win over Yale on Sunday in Naples, Florida. The Fairport, New York, native established career highs with seven goals and 11 points. She also led the team with four assists to play a hand in 65% of Notre Dame's goals in the game.
Seven ACC women's lacrosse teams are ranked in the latest Inside Lacrosse Women/IWLCA poll, with the ACC holding each of the top three spots and seven of the top 25. Following its win at BC, North Carolina is the nation's new No. 1-ranked team this week and is followed by BC (2), Syracuse (5), Duke (8), Notre Dame (14), Virginia (16) and Virginia Tech (25). The ACC has the most teams in the poll among all conferences.
