Seven WLAX Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Honors
April 26, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL—Seven University of North Carolina players earned All-ACC honors in women's lacrosse for 2022, including four first-team picks who are all repeat honorees. The Atlantic Coast Conference announced the teams on Tuesday after a vote of the league's nine head coaches. Two Carolina players made the second team, and one made All-Freshman.
Tar Heels Taylor Moreno, Jamie Ortega, Emma Trenchard and Ally Mastroianni made the first team. Moreno, Ortega and Trenchard earned first-team accolades for the third season in a row (2019, 2021, 2022) and Mastroianni did so for the second consecutive year.
Junior Emily Nalls and sophomore Caitlyn Wurzburger both earned Second-Team All-ACC honors, while defender Brooklyn Walker-Welch made the ACC All-Freshman Team.
Carolina, Boston College and Syracuse – currently ranked No. 1, 2 and 3 in the nation, respectively – each had six All-ACC honorees on the first and second teams to lead all schools. BC led all programs with five first-team honors, while UNC racked up four.
The first team is highlighted by two of the leading goal scorers in NCAA history, Boston College's Charlotte North and Ortega. North (ACC-record 334 career goals) and Ortega (318) are nearing the NCAA Division I career goals record of 341, set by Stony Brook's Courtney Murphy from 2014-18. They are just two of seven players in NCAA women's lacrosse history to reach 400 career points.
There are seven repeat first-team honorees from the 2021 first team, with Ortega, Moreno and Trenchard joining North, Mastroianni, BC's Belle Smith and Syracuse's Meaghan Tyrrell.
Pitt graduate attack Paige Petty was named to the All-ACC Team for the fourth time in her career. She was a three-time First-Team All-ACC honoree while playing as an undergraduate at Virginia Tech (2018, 2019, 2021). Petty was joined on the second team by teammate Paulina DiFatta in the Panthers' first season of lacrosse.
Twelve of the 16 first-team honorees and 20 total are seniors or graduate students.
The ACC also announced its 2022 All-Freshman Team. Virginia led all schools with three selections to the 12-member team. Named Second-Team All-ACC, UVa attack Rachel Clark was the lone player to earn spots on both the All-Freshman and All-ACC Teams.
The ACC Attacker, Midfielder, Defender, Freshman and Coach of the Year will be announced following the ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship.
The 2022 ACC Women's Lacrosse Championship begins Wednesday at Arlotta Stadium in Notre Dame, Indiana. The first round on Wednesday features No. 8 seed Pitt taking on No. 9 seed Louisville at 2 p.m. The quarterfinals begin Friday with four matchups. No. 1 seed North Carolina opens the day at noon against the Pitt-Louisville winner. No. 4 seed Duke takes on the host, No. 5 seed Notre Dame, at approximately 2:30 p.m. No. 2 seed Boston College and No. 7 seed Virginia Tech are set to face off at 5 p.m., while No. 3 seed Syracuse takes on No. 6 seed Virginia in the nightcap slated for 7:30 p.m.
The semifinals will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The championship game will be played on Saturday, May 7, at 6 p.m., with the highest remaining seed hosting the contest. All eight games of the tournament will be televised on ACC Network.
Six ACC teams are ranked in the latest IL Women/IWLCA poll, most of any league, with the league holding each of the top three spots. Unbeaten North Carolina tops the poll at No. 1 and is followed by Boston College (2), Syracuse (3), Duke (7), Virginia (16) and Notre Dame (20). The ACC has the most teams in the poll among all conferences.
