Final Four Bound! WLAX Downs Stony Brook, 8-5
May 19, 2022 | Women's Lacrosse
Top-seeded North Carolina got three goals from Andie Aldave and 10 saves from Taylor Moreno and beat eighth-seeded Stony Brook, 8-5, in an women's lacrosse NCAA Tournament quarterfinal on Thursday night at Dorrance Field.

Carolina trailed, 4-3, at halftime and 5-4 with 5:35 left in the third quarter. The Tar Heels closed the game on a 4-0 run and held the Seawolves scoreless for the final 20:35 of the game.

Aldave scored all three of her goals during the 4-0 UNC run to clinch the win, adding an assist earlier in the night. Fellow graduate transfer Sam Geiersbach had two goals and one assist, and Caitlyn Wurzburger had a goal and an assist. Elizabeth Hillman and Brooklyn Neumen each scored single goals, and Jamie Ortega had an assist.

Moreno (20-0) started in goal and made 10 saves with three ground balls to pick up the win in the cage, improving to 68-6 in her career.
"I think it was a good test for us," said Moreno. "I would rather have a hard game and challenging game than a breeze-through one, so I thought this was huge for us in terms of continuing to improve and get better as a team."
"It was obviously a tough game, and congratulations to Stony Brook," Tar Heel head coach Jenny Levy said afterward. "We're not surprised they came in feisty and well prepared. Their zone [defense] shifted a little bit from what we'd seen on film, so it took us a little time to shift to that. Taylor Moreno and our defense were amazing tonight. It started with our one-on-one stuff, then our help defense and Taylor being able to make saves. Holding this team to five goals is great. I thought the middle of our field did great, our draw crew did great. Our offense, it wasn't the performance they wanted, but they gutted it out. Sometimes you don't have to win pretty, you just need to advance.

"We're not going to hang onto this too long," Levy continued. "We will learn from it, in case we see another zone. Stony Brook has the best zone in the country."
With the victory, the Tar Heels advance to their 10th trip to the NCAA semifinals in the last 13 years, their fourth in a row and their 13th overall. UNC has reached the final four weekend in 1997, 1998, 2002, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022.
