
Pair Of Heels Selected On Day Two Of '22 MLB Draft

LOS ANGELES – University of North Carolina shortstop Danny Serretti and right-handed pitcher Davis Palermo were selected on day two of the 2022 Major League Baseball Draft on Monday.
Serretti was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the sixth round with the 177th overall pick, while Palermo was taken by the Colorado Rockies in the eighth round with the 236th overall selection.
The draft picks mark the 45th consecutive season which a Tar Heel has been taken in the MLB Draft and the fourth and fifth picks in the Scott Forbes' era. Austin Love, Caleb Roberts, and Justice Thompson were each selected in the 2021 MLB Draft.
Serretti is the second Tar Heel to be drafted the Tigers in the last four seasons, while Palermo is the ninth Carolina player to be selected by the Rockies in franchise history.
Serretti was named second-team All-ACC this past season after he finished second in the conference in total hits (96) and 10th in batting average (.365). He posted career highs in batting average, runs (56), hits, home runs (10), RBIs (54), total bases (149), slugging percentage (.567) and on-base percentage (.437). He led the Diamond Heels in hitting and on-base percentage, while ranking second on the team in slugging percentage, hits, doubles, triples (3) and total bases
From April 2 – May 20, Serretti hit safely in 26 games and finished the year by batting .408 (42-for-103) with five home runs and 30 RBIs in the final 24 games of the season.
Palermo was tabbed third-team All-America by Perfect Game and posted a 2-2 record with a 2.78 ERA and five saves in 58.1 innings pitched. He averaged 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings with a 3.1 strikeout to walk ratio, while holding opposing hitters to a .189 batting average.
Palermo ranked fourth among NCAA Division I pitchers and second in the ACC in appearances with 37.
The 2022 MLB Draft concludes Tuesday with the final 10 rounds, starting at 2 p.m. EDT.
