Duo Named To Roster For FIFA U20 Women's World Cup
July 25, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHICAGO – University of North Carolina rising junior Talia Dellaperuta and redshirt freshman Ally Sentnor have been named to the United States' roster by head coach Tracey Kevins for the 2022 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup in Costa Rica from Aug. 10-28.
Kevins named the final World Cup roster following a dominant title-winning run at the 2022 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship, which was held last March in the Dominican Republic, and five additional international matches in May and June.
Sixteen of the 20 players who helped the USA roll to a 7-0-0 record and 49-0 goal differential at the Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship made the World Cup roster.
Dellaperuta was part of the U.S. squad that competed in the Dominican, while Sentnor joined her UNC teammate for the Sud Ladies Cup in Aubagne, France last month. Dellaperuta scored five goals during World Cup qualifying.
"It is an extraordinary honor to be selected to represent your country for any event but it is even more significant if you are a part of a roster competing for a World Championship," UNC Head Coach Anson Dorrance said. Talia and Ally have that World Championship opportunity before them and it is a tribute to their talent but also to their commitment to live on a never ending ascension."
Dellaperuta is one of only three players on the roster with previous FIFA World Cup experience having represented the USA at the 2018 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup in Uruguay, appearing in one match. She has earned the most caps (19) of any player on the team.
Sentnor, one of the top players in the USA's Youth National Team system before the pandemic, has come back from an ACL injury suffered in the fall of 2021 during her first college scrimmage at UNC to make the roster.
She was one of five players who were not part of the USA's World Cup qualifying campaign to earn a spot on the roster.
The U.S. opens the tournament on Thursday, Aug. 11 against Ghana at Estadio Morera Soto (1 p.m. ET; FS2). The teams last met in the U-20 WWC in 2016, a 1-1 draw in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The USA and Ghana also met in the opening game of the 2012 U-20 World Cup, a 4-0 U.S. win, and in the opening game of the 2010 U-20 World Cup, another 1-1 draw.
The U-20s will then face the Netherlands for the first time in a U-20 World Cup on Sunday, Aug. 14 at Estadio Nacional (7 p.m. ET; FS1) and finish the group stage against Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 17 back at Estadio Morera Soto (7 p.m. ET; FS2). The USA has played Japan in the last two U-20 World Cups, both 1-0 losses, the first in the Third-Place Match of the 2016 tournament and the second in group play in 2018.
All matches of the World Cup will be played at two venues, which are only about 12 miles apart: Estadio Nacional in San José and Estadio Morera Soto in Alajuela. All the matches will be broadcast on the FOX Sports family of networks.
