Women's Soccer Set For Season Opener Against Tennessee
August 17, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's soccer program will open play on its 44th season, all under head coach Anson Dorrance, on Thursday night as the No. 10 Tar Heels welcome No. 11 Tennessee to Dorrance Field for a 7 p.m. match-up.
The Tar Heels have won seven consecutive lid lifters, including all three at Dorrance Field, and are 36-5-2 all-time in their first game of the season.
Each of their seven consecutive season opening triumphs have come at home, where UNC is 38-2-3 all-time in front of its fans to begin a home schedule. Its only losses in a home opener came in 2007 against South Carolina and 2014 against Stanford.
Carolina is coming off a 2-0 exhibition win over BYU last Saturday. Freshman Tori Dellaperuta scored the opening goal in the first half, and junior Avery Patterson added another after halftime.
Patterson also scored a pair of goals in the Tar Heels' 5-0 exhibition opening win over VCU on August 7. UNC outscored their opponents by a combined score of 7-0 and out-shot them by a combined total of 61-11 in the exhibition season.
The Lady Vols also went 2-0 during the preseason with 3-0 win over Notre Dame and 5-1 victory against Dayton.
Tennessee was picked to win the SEC by the league's 14 head coaches. The Lady Vols return 10 starters from the 2021 squad that captured the SEC Tournament Championship. UT won a program-best 20 games last season, going 20-3 en route to the NCAA Round of 16.
The Tar Heels own an 11-0-1 record against the Lady Volunteers, which includes a 6-0 mark in Chapel Hill. UNC posted a 7-0 win over Tennessee in Knoxville in the spring of 2021 to extend their series winning streak to five games.
The UNC women's soccer team will continue to use its platform to focus on mental health awareness with Thursday's game, which will be dedicated to those efforts.
