August 24, 2022 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina women's soccer team is ranked No.1 in the first United Soccer Coaches poll of the season released Tuesday.
The Tar Heels, who were ranked No. 10 in the preseason poll, jumped nine places to ascend to the top spot for the first time since Nov. 10, 2020.
Carolina opened the season with a 3-0 victory over No. 11 Tennessee before blanking 2021 Colonial Athletic Association regular season champion UNCW, 2-0. It's the second time in four seasons that UNC has posted back-to-back shutouts to start the year since blanking Indiana and Duke in the first two games of the 2019 campaign.
Preseason No. 1 Florida State dropped to No. 2 after going 1-0-1 with a win at Georgia and earning a tie on the road against South Carolina.
The Gamecocks made the second-biggest jump in the poll, vaulting eight places from preseason No. 12 to No. 4 behind third-ranked Rutgers, while Duke slipped from No. 2 to No. 5 despite posting a 2-0 record.
The Tar Heels open ACC play at Duke on September 8 and will travel to Tallahassee to face FSU on October 20.
Future Carolina opponents, No. 6 UCLA and No. 8 Virginia, also reside in the top 10 this week.
UNC returns to the pitch Thursday, Aug. 25, against Texas, which received votes in this week's poll. The match is slated for an 8 p.m. EDT start in Austin, Texas, and will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
