Field Hockey Set To Meet Michigan In Season Opener

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina opens the 2022 field hockey season on Friday with a top-three matchup, facing Michigan at 2:30 p.m. as part of this year's ACC-Big Ten Challenge. Games are set for Wake Forest's Kentner Stadum, with the Demon Deacons hosting Iowa at 5 in the second part of the day's double-header.
On Sunday the teams switch opponents, with Wake Forest and Michigan facing off at 1:30 p.m. before UNC plays Iowa at 4 p.m.
The Tar Heels will open the season ranked No. 2 nationally, behind defending national champion Northwestern. Michigan is No. 3 and Iowa is No. 5, giving Carolina a pair of top-five battles to start the fall.
Sunday's game will be televised by the ACC Network. There will be no live stream of Friday's game.
Last season, UNC came out of this traditional opening weekend with a pair of losses, falling to Michigan 3-2 and Iowa 3-1 in Iowa City. It marked the first time ever that the Tar Heels had lost both games of the ACC-Big Ten double-header.
Carolina went on to finish 13-7, reaching the NCAA Tournament field for a record 38th time but falling in the first round to eventual champion Northwestern, missing the final four for the first time since 2008.
After opening the fall on the road, UNC returns to Chapel Hill to host the ACC-Ivy Conference crossover. The Tar Heels play Princeton on Sept. 2 and Penn on Sept. 4 at Karen Shelton Stadium.
