North Carolina's Erin Matson has opened 2002 with a bang, earning National and Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors following a pair of Tar Heel wins to open the season.
Matson, a senior forward, scored in both games as second-ranked Carolina opened with wins over two top-five opponents. She scored her first goal of the season in UNC's 5-1 win over No. 3 Michigan on Friday, then delivered the gamewinner in Sunday's 3-2 overtime winner over No. 5 Iowa.
The game-winning goal was the 25th of Matson's career and capped a UNC comeback from a 2-0 halftime deficit.
Duke goalkeeper Piper Hampsch was named National and ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
The Tar Heels return to action on Friday, hosting No. 13 Princeton on Friday at 5 p.m. and Penn on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The games are part of the ACC/Ivy Conference Crossover, which also includes Louisville as the other ACC team. The Cardinals take on Penn Friday at 2:30 p.m. and then meet Princeton on Sunday at 11 a.m. All games will be played at Karen Shelton Stadium and there is no charge for admission.
