Diamond Heels Open Fall Practice
September 1, 2022 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of North Carolina baseball team returned to the diamond Thursday for the first of 45 fall practice days in preparation for the 2023 season.
The Diamond Heels will hold their first public intrasquad game on Sept. 12 at approximately 3 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium. Intrasquad games will mostly be played Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays throughout the fall season, which will conclude with an intersquad scrimmage October 14 against Duke at Boshamer Stadium.
"The fall season is instrumental in the development of our team, both collectively and individually," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "I'm anxious to see the improvements of our returning players over the summer and the opportunity to see the newcomers in a different environment.
"Everyone knows how crucial the work we put in over the next six weeks is in preparation for the upcoming season. We're excited to have everyone healthy and on campus, and we're eager to get started."
The Tar Heels return 18 lettermen, led by All-America centerfielder Vance Honeycutt and host of juniors, including Connor Bovair, Max Carlson, Johnny Castagnozzi, Tomas Frick, Eric Grintz, Mac Horvath, Alberto Osuna and Colby Wilkerson.
Catcher Max Riemer and pitchers Nick Pry and Will Sandy are the lone returning upperclassmen from last year's squad that won the ACC Championship, advanced to the Super Regional and finished as high as No. 13 in the country.
North Carolina is also scheduled to host Walters State Community College on Friday, Sept. 16.
The Diamond Heels will hold their annual Fall World Series during the first week of October. Games one and two of the series will be played Oct. 3 and 4 with game three, if necessary, to be held Oct. 6.
Weekly updates regarding scrimmage dates and times will be provided via the program's Twitter account, @DiamondHeels. All scrimmages are free and open to the public.
