Sholder Named ACC FH Defensive Player Of The Week

UNC senior Meredith Sholder has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday.
Sholder, a midfielder from Alburtis, Pa., played a crucial role on both ends of the field Friday afternoon as UNC picked up its fourth shutout win in a row, 3-0 at No. 4 Louisville. In the ACC opener for both teams, the Tar Heel defense didn't allow a shot in the first half and Sholder was an important part of that effort, stifling several Cardinal offensive opportunities.
Sholder also plays on UNC's corner defense, which faced six Louisville opportunities in the second half but didn't yield a goal.
The second-ranked Tar Heels have given up six goals total in this season's seven games and are allowing just 5.6 shots per game (2.9 on goal).
"Mere is just playing so well – she's at the top of her game," UNC coach Karen Shelton said. "So much of what she does goes unnoticed, but she's absolutely crucial to our success, offensively and defensively. I'm thrilled to see her recognized for her play – we couldn't be as successful as we've been without her playing the way she has."
Boston College's Sarah Johnson was honored as ACC Offensive Player of the Week.
Next up for the Tar Heels is a home game on Friday against Wake Forest. The 4 p.m. game will air on ACC Network Extra.
