Matson Earns Second ACC Weekly Honor
September 27, 2022 | Field Hockey
North Carolina forward Erin Matson has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after scoring two goals in Friday's 2-0 win over No. 15 Wake Forest.
Â
Matson led the way offensively as UNC earned its fifth consecutive shutout. Her first goal came in the 36th minute of play when she fought through a defender to get into the circle and then sent a hard grounder past Wake keeper Ellie Todd, who finished the day with a career-best 12 saves.
Â
Matson's second goal came in the 56th minute to give the Tar Heels a bit of breathing room down the stretch. The senior forward took a cross from sophomore Lisa Slinkert and dove to knock it into the cage. The goals bring Matson's season total to a team-best nine and her career total to 118, tied for fifth in NCAA history.
Â
Virginia goalkeeper Jet Trimborn was honored as the ACC Defensive Player of the Week.
Â
After a nine-day break, UNC returns to action on Sunday at Liberty. Game time is 2 p.m.
