CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – North Carolina won 26 of 28 events to sweep its season-opening dual meet against Queens University of Charlotte Friday at Koury Natatorium.
Carolina posted resounding victories on both sides with the men's and women's teams winning by the identical score of 188-69.
"What I loved about today's performance was that across all events, our team was performing well," UNC head coach Mark Gangloff said. "It shows how our team has become more well-rounded and to have a dominant performance means a lot, and it gives our team a lot of confidence moving forward."
UNC had six double-event winners in total with junior Patrick Hussey capturing three events: 1000 free, 200 breast, and 200 IM, edging out a UNC teammate in each event. Hussey finished nearly two seconds ahead of freshman Patrick Sleater in the 1000 free before beating teammate Dylan Citta to the wall by 1.07 seconds in the 200 breast. He finished the 200 IM 0.25 seconds in front of another teammate, Aidan Crisci.
Junior Boyd Poelke also posted multiple wins on the men's side, sweeping the 100 and 200 butterfly.
The women received multi-event victories from Grace Countie (50 free and 100 fly), Sophie Lindner (100 and 200 back), and Skyler Smith (100 and 200 breast).
Smith nearly posted an NCAA B qualifying time in the 100 breast, missing the mark by 0.40 seconds.
"Her 100 breaststroke was very impressive, her freestyle relay split was impressive, I'm really excited to see what Skyler can do this year," Gangloff stated. "She had a lot of heart today."
The Tar Heels will return to competition on Oct. 21 at UNCW.
