Heels Hold First Scrimmage Of The Fall

Chapel Hill, NC --Â The North Carolina Tar Heels held their first scrimmage of the Fall as the Blue squad took an 8-4 win over the Navy squad in an 8 1/2 inning scrimmage at Boshamer Stadium.
Vance Honeycutt got the scrimmage off with a bang when he drilled a 440-foot solo homer over the scoreboad in the bottom of the first to give Blue a 1-0 lead. Joe Jaconski ripped an RBI-double to right later in the inning for a 2-0 lead.
Navy responded with a run in the second as Eric Grintz hit a solo homer to right center. Navy then took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on Mac Horvath's long two-RBI homer to left. Reece Holbrook's run-scoring single in the bottom of the fifth tied the score at 3-3.
Blue took the lead for good as Joe Jaconski ripped a two-run homer to right center in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-3 lead. Blue picked up three more runs in the bottom of the seventh. Vance Honeycutt hit a sacrifice fly to right before Dylan King blasted a two-run homer to right. Navy picked up its last run of the scrimmage on Tomas Frick's run-scoring double down the left field line in the eighth.
Blue had eight hits to seven for Navy, and each squad committed one error.
Eight pitchers saw action: Jake Knapp, Max Carlson, Dalton Pence, Kyle Percival, Matthew Matthijs, Cameron Padgett, Carson Starnes and Justin Szestowicki.
The Tar Heels will hold their next closed scrimmage on Tuesday.
