SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Balanced scoring and staunch defense earned the third-ranked North Carolina field hockey team a 4-1 victory over No. 13 Syracuse Friday afternoon in an Atlantic Coast Conference battle at J.S. Coyne Field. The Tar Heels led 4-0 on goals by four different players before the Orange got on the board with a penalty stroke with 44 seconds to play in the game.
UNC improved to 10-2 overall and 4-0 in ACC play with the win. The Tar Heels stay in New York for the weekend to take on UAlbany in Albany, N.Y., on Sunday at noon.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Tar Heels went up for good on a penalty corner in the 19th minute of play. Freshman Charly Bruder scored her team-high ninth goal of the season, with assists from senior Romea Riccardo and graduate student Pleun Lammers, who spent the first three years of her career in a Syracuse uniform before transferring to UNC over the summer.
In the 25th minute, the Tar Heels were awarded a penalty stroke and freshman Sanne Hak delivered to make it 2-0 at halftime. The Tar Heels are now 3-0 on penalty strokes this season, with Hak making two of those.
In the 41st minute, sophomore Ryleigh Heck dribbled into the circle and sent a shot between the SU keeper's legs to make it 3-0 Carolina.
Early in the fourth quarter, Heck fed a ball to senior Katie Dixon, who shot from the left of the cage to score her third goal of the season and put the Tar Heels up 4-0.
Eefke van den Nieuwenhof's penalty stroke in the closing minutes kept the Tar Heels from their third shutout in ACC play. It marked just the second goal in four conference games that the UNC defense has allowed.
Margin of victory aside, UNC was outshot for the first time this season, getting off a season-low six shots to the Orange's eight. Syracuse also led in corners, 5-3.
