FH Stays Unbeaten In ACC Play With 3-1 Win Over BC
October 6, 2023 | Field Hockey
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked North Carolina field hockey team earned its third conference win of the season on Friday, beating No. 11 Boston College 3-1 at Karen Shelton Stadium.
Freshman Charly Bruder scored twice and Paityn Wirth added another for Tar Heels, who improved to 9-1 overall and 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
"This team is a team of gamers," UNC coach Erin Matson said. "They show up whether they're scoring goals, playing team defense, cheering from the bench, whatever their role is – they know it, they own it, and they show up. We're so proud."
UNC returns to action on Sunday with a top-10 nonconference matchup, hosting No. 10 Liberty at KSS for a 2 p.m. game.
Bruder put the Tar Heels up for good in the 25th minute of play, chipping in a ball that bounced off the BC keeper to get Carolina on the board before halftime.
The score sat at 1-0 until late in the third quarter, thanks in part to junior Kelly Smith's defensive heroics. Just under two minutes into the period, BC's Margo Carlin got off a shot that sailed past UNC keeper Maddie Kahn, but Smith sprinted to bat it away with her stick and save the game-tying goal. It was her second defensive save in the past two games after she also had one in the win at Saint Joseph's last Sunday.
Late in the third quarter, the Tar Heels struck again. Junior Lisa Slinkert sent a ball across the cage from the left side and BC keeper Caroline Kelly tipped it into the air with her stick. Running toward the goal, Wirth connected with the ball in midair and sent it in for a 2-0 lead.
BC scored on a penalty corner early in the fourth quarter to again make it a one-goal game, 2-1. Mia Garber's goal marked the first that UNC has given up in ACC play so far this season.
With just under five minutes to play, Bruder scored another on the Tar Heels' only penalty corner of the second half. Wirth had the insert and Romea Riccardo the stop to set up Bruder's shot.
The Tar Heels led 16-6 in shots. Kahn made two saves in playing all 60 minutes for UNC. Kelly made seven saves for the Eagles, who fell to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in ACC play. Friday's game marked the first time this season that BC has lost a game in regulation – the first four losses of the season all were in overtime.
