OSHAWA, Ontario – North Carolina women's lacrosse alumnae Ally Mastroianni and Taylor Moreno helped the United States win gold at the inaugural Super Sixes event in Oshawa, Ontario, from Oct. 6-8.Â
Team USA first defeated Kenya before taking down the Haudenosaunee, 13-9. The U.S. squad fell to Canada, 14-10, in its third game of the tournament before facing the host country again in championship play.
The red, white and blue then posted a gritty 8-7 to secure the gold medal after trailing, 6-3, at the half. Moreno, the team's lone goalkeeper, made two game-winning saves in the final 40 seconds as the U.S. held on for the win.Â
Brooklyn Walker-Welch, current UNC junior defender, earned silver as a member of Team Canada. Canada began the event with a 10-5 win over the Haudenosaunee before a 16-1 victory against Kenya. They topped the U.S. by a score of 14-10 in their third game, but ultimately fell to them to settle for silver.
Mastroianni was one of three athletes on the 12-person U.S. roster who won gold at the 2022 World Lacrosse Championship. Moreno was a training team member for the 2022 Worlds team and is the two-time reigning Athletes Unlimited champion.
Both Mastroianni and Moreno, along with four other former Tar Heels, now turn their attention to box lacrosse as part of the 2024 U.S. Box Training Team.
