Sentnor Named Midfielder Of The Year, Six Tar Heels Earn All-ACC Honors
November 1, 2023 | Women's Soccer
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Atlantic Coast Conference announced its women's soccer postseason honors Wednesday afternoon, with Ally Sentnor being named the league's Midfielder of the Year to highlight North Carolina's honorees.
Six Tar Heels earned All-ACC praise, including Avery Patterson and Sentnor on the first team. Maycee Bell, Savy King and Sam Meza landed on the All-ACC Second Team while King and Evelyn Shores were tabbed to the All-Freshman Team.
Sentnor becomes the first Carolina player to earn a major postseason conference award since Bell was named freshman of the year in 2019. She is also the first to receive player-of-the-year recognition since Alessia Russo in 2018, and the first Tar Heel to be named the ACC Midfielder of the Year since the league began designating positional awards in 2004.
A redshirt sophomore, Sentnor has seven goals, four assists and 18 points on the year and leads the team with 73 shots and 20 shots on target. Three of her goals have been game-winners and she has started all 19 matches. This is also the second straight year Sentnor has garnered First Team All-ACC praise.
Patterson, a senior co-captain, finds herself on the first team after garnering second team accolades a season ago. The forward currently leads the roster with eight goals and 18 points, even recording the third brace of her career against Syracuse on Senior Day.
Earning first team honors for the third time in her career is Bell, a staple on a UNC back line which has only conceded 14 goals and allows 6.6 shots per game. The redshirt senior has started all 16 games she has played in and has two assists and one goal on the year.
One of the country's top midfielders, Meza has now collected All-ACC selections each of her four seasons in Chapel Hill. She has earned a starting role in the 17 games she has played in during her senior season, notching her first goal of the year against Syracuse.
King, who twice earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors and was ranked No. 2 on Top Drawer Soccer's Top 100 Freshmen list, has established herself as one of the nation's best defenders. Starting at center back in every match, she leads the team in minutes and has logged a full 90 in 15 contests.
Joining King on the All-Freshman squad is Shores, a midfielder who amassed four goals, three assists and 11 points during her first season with the Tar Heels. She recorded a brace against USC in just the second match of her career and started six of the 13 games she appeared in.
