VB Earns Comeback Victory Over Duke

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina volleyball team ended the 2023 season in dramatic fashion on Friday afternoon, downing Duke in five sets in Carmichael Arena.
After dropping the first set, 25-22, to the Blue Devils, the Tar Heels found themselves in a 19-12 defect in set two. Carolina went on a 7-1 run to make it a one-point set, 20-19, before Duke pulled away again. Up 24-21 over the Tar Heels, Duke needed just one point to take a two-set advantage, but the Tar Heels refused to go down, forcing three set points, before ultimately taking the set, 27-25.
Then, after Duke took set three, 25-21, the Tar Heels needed to win set four to force a fifth set. Trailing 16-7, Carolina clawed its way back into the set to make it 24-21. With the Blue Devils needing just one point to seal the match, the Tar Heels reeled off four straight points to five them a 25-24 lead. A 4-2 run to end the set, highlighted by a kill from Emani' Foster and back-to-back kills Mabrey Shaffmaster gave the Tar Heels a 28-26 set four win.
The Tar Heels took the match with a 15-12 set five victory.
Junior outside Mabrey Shaffmaster led the match with her second 25-kill performance in a row to go with nine digs and a pair of blocks and aces. Graduate outside hitter Emani' Foster had 18 kills, her thirteenth double-digit performance of three season.
Sophomore setter Anita Babic tallied her third double-double of the season, leading the match with a career-best 19 digs to go with 32 assists and two aces.
Sydney Nolan tallied a career-best 11 blocks, a match-best, and eight kills.
As a team, the Tar Heels out-hit the Blue Devils .183-.170, led in blocks (14-12), digs (71-62), aces (7-6), assists (63-55) and kills (67-58).
The Tar Heels finished 2023 the season with a 13-14 record, going 7-11 in ACC play.
