Heck A Finalist For Field Hockey Honda Award
December 22, 2023 | Field Hockey
Add another honor to the list for North Carolina sophomore Ryleigh Heck.
Â
Heck is one of four finalists for the 2024 Honda Sport Award for Field Hockey.
Â
Heck is joined on the list by Rutgers University's Iris Langejans and teammates Annabel Skubisz and Lauren Wadas of Northwestern University.
Â
The Honda Sport Award has been presented annually by the Collegiate Women Sports Awards for the past 48 years to the top women athletes in 12 NCAA-sanctioned sports and signifies "the best of the best in collegiate athletics."
Â
UNC's Erin Matson won last season, making her the sport's first three-time winner since legendary North Carolina coach Karen Shelton, who won three times while a player at West Chester.
Â
The field hockey finalists were selected by a panel of experts and coaches from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Â
Heck, a sophomore from Ocean City, N.J., was recently named the 2023 NFHCA DI National Player of the Year after helping her team to its 11th NCAA Championship and earning 2023 NCAA All-Tournament team honors. The forward led the Tar Heels in scoring with 34 points on 13 goals and eight assists and scored the deciding goal in the sudden death penalty shootout in the NCAA title game.
