Honeycutt Named To Golden Spikes Watch List

CARY, N.C. – University of North Carolina sophomore Vance Honeycutt was one of 55 players named to the 2023 Golden Spikes Award Preseason Watch List revealed by USA Baseball on Friday, kicking off the process of identifying the nation's top amateur baseball player for the 2023 season.
Moving forward, the Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will maintain the award's watchlist on a rolling basis, allowing athletes to play themselves into consideration for the award based on their performances throughout the season.
Honeycutt is the first UNC player to be included on award's preseason watch list since Aaron Sabato in 2020. He joins joins Dustin Ackley (2008), Skye Bolt (2014), Gianluca Dalatri (2018), Kent Emanuel (2012), Matt Harvey (2009), Colin Moran (2012), Trent Thornton (2014) and Sabato as UNC sophomores who earned the distinction. Honeycutt is the 14th different Tar Heel to be named to the list.
Honeycutt has received preseason first team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball, D1 Baseball, National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Perfect Game, and was tabbed second team All-America by Baseball America. The Salisbury, N.C., native blasted 25 home runs and stole 29 bases in his freshman season while slashing .296/.409/.672 with 57 RBIs.
He was selected as ACC Preseason Player of the Year by D1 Baseball and Perfect Game.
Fan voting will again play a part in the Golden Spikes Award in 2023. Amateur baseball fans can vote for their favorite players on GoldenSpikesAward.com, beginning on May 22 with the naming of the semifinalists. USA Baseball will announce the finalists for the award on June 7, and fan voting will once again open at GoldenSpikesAward.com before closing on June 21.
