February 10, 2023 | Women's Lacrosse
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The top-ranked University of North Carolina women's lacrosse team embarks on its highly-anticipated 2023 campaign Saturday at 2 p.m. ET at Dorrance Field in Chapel Hill, playing host to No. 12 James Madison in the season opener.
Prior to the Tar Heels' game against the Dukes, UNC will host Delaware State and Howard at 11 a.m. as part of an HBCU Celebration doubleheader to kickstart the new season. Delaware State and Howard are the only two HBCU women's lacrosse programs in Division I.
Both games will be streamed on ACCNX with Matt Krause on call. Admission is free and open to the public.
In honor of the season kickoff event and HBCU celebration, free Dunkin' Donuts will be available for the first game while Crumbl Cookies will be provided for both contests. Additionally, commemorative 2022 National Champion pennants will be given to the first 450 fans in attendance and there will be an autograph session with the team after UNC's game.
The reigning national champions begin their quest to make it two in a row – and four overall – following the best year in program history. The Tar Heels went 22-0 for its first undefeated season in 2022, earning its sixth-straight Atlantic Coast Conference crown and culminating with its third national title.
UNC enters Saturday's contest against James Madison on a 22-game winning streak. Playing its first of nine regular-season games at Dorrance Field, the Tar Heels have not lost at home since March 23, 2019.
North Carolina is picking up right where it left off, as it is the unanimous preseason favorite by ILWomen/IWLCA and Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine. A nation-leading seven Tar Heels were selected as ILWomen Preseason All-America while six, tied for the second-most in the country, were tabbed USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason All-America.
Returning for Carolina is attacker Caitlyn Wurzburger and defenders Emily Nalls and Brooklyn Walker-Welch, all All-America honorees a season ago. Wurzburger tallied 34 goals and 42 assists for 76 points, while Nalls and Walker-Welch were part of one of the nations' best defenses that limited opponents to just 8.5 goals per game.
At the helm of the Tar Heels' program is Jenny Levy, who is entering her 28th year as the only head coach Carolina women's lacrosse has ever known. Levy, who was named National Coach of the Year in 2022, was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame in the fall.
