Baseball Powers Past Stony Brook
March 4, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Patrick Alvarez and Hunter Stokely each hit a two-run homer, Mac Horvath added solo shot and No. 13 North Carolina won its fourth straight game with a 7-5 victory over Stony Brook Saturday.
The Tar Heels (8-3) scored two runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings with Alberto Osuna hitting a two-run single in the third before Alvarez and Stokely each hit their two-run homer in the fourth and fifth inning, respectively.
Osuna and Jackson Van De Brake collected two hits apiece and Colby Wilkerson drew a pair of walks.
"I didn't think we played well, but we played well enough to win the game," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "I was disappointed in our at bats after Stokely hit that home run. I talked to our guys about that, and we'll be better there."
Horvath, who hit a walk-off home run Friday, launched a 353 shot to left field in his first at bat to open the scoring.
Connor Bovair (1-0) scattered four hits over six innings, striking out five and allowing one run.
"I thought Connor's stuff go better as he got deeper in the game," Forbes said. "I'm proud of [Max Carlson and Bovair] because after that first weekend we challenged them about giving us some length. I'm a firm believer that with six days you should be able to go out there and throw 100 pitches every single time and be effective, with a minimum of six innings. Both of those guys did a good job with that."
Stony Brook (0-8) scored its lone run off Bovair in the fourth when Johnny Pilla lifted a sacrifice fly to score Matt Brown-Eiring, who walked to lead off the frame.
Evan Giordano hit a two-run home run for the Seawolves in the seventh. SBU added two additional runs in the ninth.
Ben Fero (0-2) yielded six hits and five runs while pitching into the fourth for the Seawolves.
The series concludes Sunday at 1 p.m. with RHP Jake Knapp getting the start for North Carolina.
