
No. 1 Women's Tennis Defeats No. 3 Duke, 4-1

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The UNC women's tennis team (27-0, 13-0 ACC) captured a senior day victory over rival No. 3 Duke (22-3, 11-2), 4-1 on Friday afternoon.
The match started at the newly dedicated Chewning Tennis Center before moving inside to the historic Cone-Kenfield Indoor Courts halfway through doubles competition.
After dropping doubles court three, the No. 4-ranked duo of Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig dominated court one, winning 6-1. Reese Brantmeier and Reilly Tran, paired together for only the second time, clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court two to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 lead going into singles play.
Duke tied the match at one apiece to start singles, winning court four, but the Tar Heels rallied and finished off the Blue Devils before any match saw a third set.
No. 33 Anika Yarlagadda put Carolina back on top 2-1 after she won 6-0, 6-1 on court six.
No. 10 Reese Brantmeier picked up a vital victory over Duke's No. 73 Cameron Morra, winning 6-3, 6-2 on court two. Brantmeier's victory setup No. 97 Reilly Tran to clinch the match for the Tar Heels, winning 6-1, 6-2 on court five.
Fiona Crawley and Carson Tanguilig matches both went unfinished.
The Tar Heels finish the regular season undefeated while extending their win streak to 27 straight matches. The Tar Heels also finished the year undefeated at home for the fifth-consecutive season.
Before the match, the Tar Heels honored senior Sophia Patel. This is Patel's fifth year in Chapel Hill after taking advantage of the NCAA's COVID-19 eligibility extension. Patel won four ITA Championships during her career at UNC.
North Carolina also honored senior Joey Kalbas. Kalbas has served as Director of Data Analytics since the spring of 2020 and is the son of head coach Brian Kalbas.
