Baseball Falls One Run Short Of Series Win Against Miami
April 15, 2023 | Baseball
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Lorenzo Carrier hit a home run during the three-run second inning, and Miami defeated No. 13 North Carolina 4-3 on Saturday.
"After losing two, I know fans aren't going to want to hear this, but I feel like we're in a really good place," UNC head coach Scott Forbes said. "We just have to play better. Our guys are going to compete. We have talent; we have to play better top to bottom."
Miami took a 4-1 lead through five innings thanks to solo home runs by Carrier in the third, Zach Levenson in the fifth and a two-run double by Domonic Pitelli in the third. UNC starter Jake Knapp (3-3) gave up four runs over 4.2 innings. The junior struck out six but walked four and surrendered five hits.
Casey Cook and Jackson Van De Brake – who collected three hits each – scored on Tomas Frick's single in the sixth, but Vance Honeycutt was tagged out at home trying to plate the tying run.
The Miami bullpen held the Tar Heels hitless in the final three innings, with Chris Scinta striking out three in 2.0 innings and Alejandro Torres pitching a 1-2-3 ninth to earn the save. Ben Chestnutt (3-0) earned the victory, tossing 3.1 innings of relief.
CJ Kayfus had three hits for the Hurricanes, including a double.
The Tar Heels return to the diamond Tuesday, April 18, against Charlotte. The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
