CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Carolina softball team (23-26) fell to Charlotte, 3-2, on Wednesday night in Anderson Stadium. Despite Lilli Backes and Kenna Raye Dark combining for 10 strikeouts on the night in the circle, the Tar Heels tallied just four hits in the game.
Alex Brown, Bri Stubbs, Carlie Myrtle and Carsyn Snead each had a base hit in the loss, with Brown extending her hitting streak to 13 games.
After a scoreless first, the 49ers plated all three of their runs in the top of the second inning, scoring on three hits and a Tar Heel error. Just one of their three runs in the inning were earned.
The Tar Heels weren't able to plate their first run of the game until the bottom of the sixth. Snead and Brown opened the inning with back-to-back hits, advancing to second and third base on a Charlotte throwing error. Back-to-back RBI groundouts from Stubbs and Abby Settlemyre scored both of Carolina's runs.
After turning a double play to end the top of the seventh, the Tar Heels went down in order in the home side of the inning to end the game.
In the circle, Kenna Raye Dark shined in five innings of relief. The freshman right-hander did not allow a hit in five innings of work and recorded six strikeouts, a new career-best.
Backes (14-13) took the loss, finishing with five hits in two innings of work with four strikeouts.
